Due to the high volume of applications received, our volunteers can only respond to applicants that may be a suitable match.
Applicants selected to move on to the next step will be contacted to set up a phone interview within 7 - 10 days.
The full application process outlined below can take 4 to 6 weeks. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Application Process
Step 1: Application
Tell us about your family, living situation and what you are looking for in a dog.
Full details about your lifestyle, expectations and experience will help our team create the perfect match.
Step 4: Home Visit
An adoption coordinator visits your home to meet all members of your family, and answer any questions.
You may also meet the potential dog at this point, to see how it interacts with you and your other animals.
Step 2: Phone Interview
If your application is selected, we will contact you in about a week to set up a phone interview.
We will get to know more about you, your family and how you see a new dog fitting into your lifestyle.
Step 5: Extended Visit
If selected, you will pay the non-refundable adoption fee and begin a two-week “extended visit” to adjust to each other and allow the dog to settle in.
K9C volunteers are always available to support you with any questions or concerns.
Step 3: Pre-Screening
Our adoption coordinators further assess your application, contact your references and vet clinic.
If your application meets our requirements at this stage, we will arrange a home visit.
Step 6: It's Official!
At any time during the extended visit, if it's a perfect match we can finalize the adoption.*
You will receive your dog's paperwork, medical files and certificate of adoption.
* Dogs still requiring vet follow-up are considered 'foster to adopt'. Once vetting is complete, the adoption is finalized.

Our adoption fee includes full vetting, spay/neuter, all mandatory vaccines, flea treatment, deworming, microchip and 30 days

* A $100 surcharge applies for international dogs to cover additional costs (flight, customs, vetting required for entry to Canada)
